Shifting Our Focus on Geopolitics & Black Leadership
by Akindele Akinyemi
In today’s rapidly changing world, it is critical for Black leaders, policymakers, and communities to engage in global geopolitics with a strategic and economic mindset. While many are vocal about domestic issues, it is equally important to recognize the interconnectedness of global affairs and their impact on Black communities worldwide.
The Need for a Geopolitical Perspective
For too long, Black politicians have been reactionary rather than proactive when it comes to global issues. Meanwhile, other communities have effectively leveraged their geopolitical power to shape discussions on pressing matters such as Gaza, Israel, illegal immigration, and international trade. They advocate for their interests while simultaneously strengthening their domestic economies and global alliances. It’s time for us to adopt a similar approach—one that ensures Black voices are not only heard but also carry influence on the world stage.
While advocacy and political engagement are crucial, they are not enough. True power comes from economic strength. To create a lasting impact, we must build a robust economic ecosystem that connects Black communities domestically and globally. This means establishing strong trade networks, investing in industries that drive economic growth, and fostering business partnerships that position Africa and the diaspora as key players in the global market.
A strong economic foundation allows us to shape policies, influence global trade agreements, and ensure our communities are not left behind. We must move beyond symbolic gestures and focus on tangible economic strategies that build generational wealth and create self-sustaining industries.
Rather than reacting to global events through the lens of mainstream narratives, we must craft our own perspective. What does Africa’s rise mean for global trade? How do migration policies affect Black communities across the world? What role do we play in global conflicts and diplomatic negotiations? These are the questions we must answer by developing well-researched, community-driven positions that reflect our collective interests.
The world is shifting, and those who are prepared will shape the future. Black leaders must adopt a strategic, long-term vision that prioritizes economic empowerment, geopolitical awareness, and self-determination. We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines while others dictate policies that impact our future.
Let’s take control of our narrative, build economic bridges across continents, and engage in geopolitics with a clear, unified vision. The time for unity, strategy, and action is now!
